The CPR courses teach lay rescuers how to recognize and treat life-threatening emergencies, including cardiac arrest and choking for adult, child and infant victims. Students also learn to recognize the warning signs of heart attack and stroke in adults and breathing difficulties in children. There are several different classes to choose from including the use of AED's.
The EMT Basic course is designed to train individuals to provide
comprehensive emergency medical care at the basic life support
level to victims of illness or injury. The course is an intensive
combination of classroom, skills sessions, and clinical time. Upon
completion of the course, students are able to assess and
appropriately treat conditions ranging from simple fractures,
stroke, and chest pain to critical trauma, cardiac arrest, and
childbirth. Some of the specific skills learned are: patient
assessment, airway management techniques, vital signs, cardiac
arrest management, and trauma management skills, which include
cervical spine stabilization, back boarding, management of bleeding
and shock, and splinting techniques. Certification as an EMT
requires the successful completion of a national standard written
and practical exam.
Students will be required to pass the final in-class written exam
with a minimum of 70% to be eligible to take the final practical
skills. The practical skills portion must be passed in order to
take the National Registry of EMT's final written exam. Students
that pass the NREMT exam will be certified by the State of
Minnesota as an Emergency Medical Technician - Basic.
The 24-hour EMT Refresher course is a review of the skills and knowledge covered in the EMT-Basic course. Attendance in an EMT Refresher course and successful completion of practical testing every two years is required by the state and NREMT to maintain EMT certification. In addition to reviewing core curriculum, North Country EMS Training has used the EMT Refresher course as a vehicle to inform participants of changes in emergency care such as new equipment, current research, or issues of general concern to EMS providers.
The 40-hour First Responder course trains students to enter the emergency response field with the basic skills needed to care for the sick and injured until higher-trained personnel arrive. Students will learn basic skills including, but not limited to, backboarding, bleeding and shock management, medical evaluation, and many others. There is no clinical component of the course. Students must pass a final written exam and practical skills at the national standard level. Attendance is mandatory. This course complies with Federal Department of Transportation and Minnesota Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board guidelines to allow the student to become certified as a First Responder in the state of Minnesota.
The 16-hour First Responder Refresher course is a review of the skills and knowledge covered in the 40-hour First Responder course. The First Responder Refresher course is used not only to review core content, but also to update participants on new and pertinent information.
